DINNER WITH WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Stratford upon Avon, May 1583

This celebratory and imaginative dinner with William Shakespeare and his devoted wife, Anne Hathaway, took place in the White Swan Tavern (which still stands) in Stratford upon Avon, in May 1583.

The dinner party pack contains booklets, illustrated recipes , menus, invites, a music CD, trivia, organising instructions and much more.

The eight courses of this literary and Elizabethan themed dinner party have been cleverly re-created for you by our historic cookery expert - Carol Wilson of the British Guild of Food Writers.

In the Bard's time the medieval cooks used many of the same type of foodstuffs that are on the menu today. The dishes and recipes they prepared were extremely delicious and nourishing. Overall the diet was much healthier than what many people eat at a dinner party nowadays.

Shakespeare, in his plays, did often refer to food . Anthony and Cleopatra were said to eat gigantic breakfasts while Prince Troilus was given a lesson in the virtues of making cake. This was somewhat more civilised than Titus Andronicus who cooked his enemies in a pie!
