Bookshop
spills the beans for new authors
wanting
to sell books.
The Printed Word Bookshop, in St.Helier, Jersey has been selling books
to the public since Christmas 1988. Over the years they have bought millions
of books from the sales representatives of all the major Publishing Houses,
from the UK's largest wholesaler and also from self-published authors.
When choosing titles to sell the business has always applied certain principles
to decide what gets given a bit of the valuable shelf space in their shop.
First and foremost the work must be saleable to the public and then meet
certain other important criterion such as the format, the feel and whether
it has a bar-code for the Epos system.
A book that doesn't conform to the norm can be a nuisance for the retailer
and may confuse the customer.
“Remember, when faced with a choice a buyer wants their decision to be
as easy as possible. And that goes for the end customer as well as for
the bookseller” said Nick Thorne of The Printed Word.
Experience has taught them what will sell to their customers and they
have come to know when to take a gamble on putting an unknown Author's
title on their shelves.
Since becoming booksellers at Christmas 1988, they have been approached
by all sorts of self-published authors asking them to stock their books.
Noticing that many of the writers hadn't thought about the mechanics of
selling the book, after it was written, the owner's of The Printed Word
realised that there was a demand for some of the information from the
sharp end of book industry. They got together some experts and recorded
interviews with an author that found that she needed to boost the marketing
effort of her mainstream publisher in order to make sales; an interview
with a publisher's rep who spends his life travelling around bookshops
of all sizes and could give some advice on how to approach a branch of
a multiple, going the self-publishing route and what subject was 'Hot'
at the moment. Christine, from the bookshop, gives the listener a list
of things that a book needs before it would get bought for resale by her
shop and more.
If you want to
know what gets accepted and what gets rejected, they reveal all in the
package called: Write Your Way To Freedom available from www.WriteYourWayToFreedom.com
. The interviews are recorded on Audio CD and are accompanied with a written
transcript.
The package also has several other useful components, included in the
manual, such as the module: 'How to Write a Novel in Ten Weeks'. Remembering
how many great pieces of work came out of the Victorian era, they have
republished some of the teachings of Professor Meiklejohn from 1899 and
called it 'The Lost Art Of Writing English'. His timeless approach to
good language technique has been recorded on two further Audio CDs with
the text reprinted inside the manual that will brush up the author's technique.
The package sells for £39.97 plus postage and is available
from our dedicated website:
